Why the analysis matters

An Italian surname is a clue. Documents reconstruct the family connection.

Brazilian certificates may contain translated names, altered surnames, approximate ages and generic places such as “Italy.” For this reason, a single record rarely establishes where the ancestor was born or which documents still need to be located.

Dates, relatives, places, immigration and naturalization are compared together. This analysis helps identify the correct ancestor, select the appropriate archives and assess feasibility according to the applicable law and available documentation.

You do not need everything to get started.
Research can begin with limited information: a name, where the person lived in Brazil, relatives’ names or a family certificate. The fewer clues available, the more extensive the research may be — and this is considered in the proposal.

Frequently asked questions

What you need to know before getting started.

How do I know whether I may be eligible for Italian citizenship?

The answer depends on the law applicable to the case, the relevant dates and how citizenship was transmitted between generations. Each family must therefore be assessed individually.

Can I begin without knowing the comune of origin?

Yes. Research can begin with information and documents preserved by the family in Brazil, even when the town of origin in Italy is still unknown.

Can Brazilian naturalization affect eligibility?

It can. The date and circumstances of naturalization must be compared with the applicable law, the family history and the available documentation. The existence of a naturalization alone does not produce the same answer for every family.

Do I need all the certificates before starting?

No. The work can begin with what the family already has. From there, we identify which Brazilian and Italian records still need to be located.
